Acid Rain
by Hrishikesh Srirangam
Acid rain is also referred to as acid deposition. It includes all forms of precipitation that have acidic components in them. They fall from the atmosphere to the ground in both wet and dry forms. Some very common acidic components in acid rain are sulfuric acid or nitric acid. Rain, snow, fog, hail, or even dust can have these properties.
What is acid rain?
The concept of acid rain is relevant to the topic of acids and bases because its properties are affected by its pH. Acid rain generally has a pH that is between 4.2 and 4.4. Because the pH is less than 7, it is an acid and so reacts with metals, unlike bases. Also, when acid rain comes into contact with a base, a neutralization reaction occurs between an acid, such as sulfuric acid, and a base, like calcium carbonate. This reaction produces water, calcium sulfate, and carbon dioxide.
Relation to acids/bases
This is a scale that shows the pH of some common substances. Acid rain is at a pH of 4.3, which is what makes it an acid.
This is limestone, which is calcium carbonate. The neutralization reaction between sulphuric acid and calcium carbonate produces water and calcium sulfate. Because calcium sulfate is soluble in water, i gets worn down over time.
Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is formed when sulphur dioxide (SO2) mixes with water. When it falls in the form of rain, it comes into contact with limestone, or CaCO3. The reaction produces CaSO4, H2O, and CO2. The balanced equation in this case is: CaCO3 + H2SO4 ---> H2O + CO2 + CaSO4 What is the molarity of the solution of sulfuric acid if 20mL of 0.100M CaCO3 is needed to neutralize 25 mL of the acid? 0.020L CaCO3 0.100mol 1 mol H2SO4 = 0.0020 mol 1 L 1 mol CaCO30.0020mol/0.025 L = 0.08 M
