SPACE RACE
What Happened?
- The Space Race was a 20th Century competition between two nation-states, the Soviet Union (USSR) and the United States (US)
- It was important because it showed the world which country had the best science, technology, and economic system
Did the Space race increase or decrease tensions Between the US and the soviet union?
The success of Sputnik had a major impact on the Cold War and the United States. In this way, the launch of Sputnik fueled both the space race and the arms race, in addition to increasing Cold War tensions, as each country worked to prepare new methods of attacking the other.
How did the event impact each of the United States and the Soviet Union?
- The space race between the u.s and soviet union was a tipping point in the history of mankind. The space race spawned pioneering efforts to launch artifcial satellites. It prompted competiitve countries to send unmanned space probes to the moon, venus, mars.
Why is the event historically significant to the Cold War AND overall human history?
During the Cold War the United States and Soviet Union engaged a competition to see who had the best technology in space. The space race was historically significant to the cold war and overall human history because it created space associations that will develop better technology for space travel so we have a better chance of inhabiting other alien planets.
Who Won?
By landing on the moon, the United States effectively “won” the space race that had begun with Sputnik’s launch in 1957. For their part, the Soviets made four failed attempts to launch a lunar landing craft between 1969 and 1972, including a spectacular launch-pad explosion in July 1969.
