What is Poetry?
Literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm; poems collectively or as a genre of literature.
Rhythm, rhyme, & stanzas
Rhythm
Rhyme
Rhythm can be described as the beat and pace of a poem. Rhythm is created by the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line or verse. Rhythm can help to strengthen the meaning of words and ideas in a poem.
Stanzas
The correspondence of two or more words with similar-sounding final syllables placed so as to echo one another. Rhyme is used by poets and occasionally by prose writers to produce sounds appealing to the reader's senses and to unify and establish a poem's stanzaic form.
Stanza, a division of a poem consisting of two or more lines arranged together as a unit. More specifically, a stanza usually is a group of lines arranged together in a recurring pattern of metrical lengths and a sequence of rhymes.
Forms of Poetry
Narrative
Dramatic
Narrative poetry is a form of poetry that tells a story, often making the voices of a narrator and characters as well; the entire story is usually written in metered verse. Narrative poems do not need rhyme. The poems that make up this genre may be short or long, and the story it relates to may be complex.
Dramatic poetry, also known as dramatic monologue, is meant to be spoken or acted. Similar to narrative poetry, dramatic poetry tells a story. You're most likely to find dramatic poetry in the form of dramatic (or even comedic) monologues or soliloquies written in a rhyming verse.
Lyrical
A lyric poem is short, highly musical verse that conveys powerful feelings. The poet may use rhyme, meter, or other literary devices to create a song-like quality. Unlike narrative poetry, which chronicles events, lyric poetry doesn't have to tell a story. A lyric poem is a private expression of emotion by a single speaker.

Free Verse
The water ran Like the light at noon The water rippled And my feet caressed. The water was cold And on the other side I noticed your look, The water in my hands takes shelter But your soul was limited. Water gives life The water was like your eyes The water was your fire And in the meantime I only felt your game.
What is figurative language?
Figurative language refers to the use of words in a way that deviates from the conventional order and meaning in order to convey a complicated meaning, colorful writing, clarity, or evocative comparison. It uses an ordinary sentence to refer to something without directly stating it.
Simile & Metaphor
Simile
My mom is like a flower Her voice as sweet as a berry Her attitude with such a power Even sometimes she’s scary
Metaphor
My dog is a baby He gets easily dirty Diapers he may get maybe Eventhough his age is thirthy
Onomatopoeia
The water was flowing in the river drip, drip, drip The sun was lightning the day The birds singing on the branches tweet, tweet The wind moving the clouds in the sky Thats the ideal place to be.
Personification
When I look at my window and hear the song of the birds I heard the tremendous sound of the sun, The sun hot like a baked potato What else can I look for to drink From one moment or another my mouth was filled It was mango fruit that came out of nowhere It was tasty as a cake This filled me with joy that I would almost explode When he saw the sunset he smiled at me and said welcome to the west I could understand my destiny was to be his faithful friend When I least remember I was back at home when I opened my eyes filled with tears I could understand it, my role was just an illusion that vanished Just like the Wild West and its fabulous self
