Unit 1

What is possibilism?

POSSIBILISM

A view that acknowledges limits on the effects of the natural environment and focuses more on the role that human culture plays.

Example of possibilism

An example of environmental possibilism is the creation of the Brooklyn Bridge, linking the two boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn in New York. Although the East River was a barrier preventing people from easily being able to go from one city to another, humans had the idea of creating a bridge over it, connecting the two cities, which eased transportation. This shows how people thought of possibilities of how to surpass natural barriers, which in this case was the East River.

"There are no necessities, but everywhere possibilities; and man, as master of the possibilities, is the judge of their use."

Environmental determinism VS possibilism

Possibilism

Environmental determinism

The belief that landforms and climate are the most powerful forces shaping human behavior and societal development. Examples include deserts or mountains.

The physical environment may limit some human actions, but people have the ability to adjust to their environment. An example is the creation of roads over arid land.

People sometimes get these two mixed up, so I wanted to make the difference between them more clear.

Why is this relevant?

How will this influence my future in 2021?

I can use this information in the future to help me better understand the world around me and the creations humans have made to help them get past environmental barriers. It also helps me understand the different ways that people display their cultures with their creations over the physical landscape. Different cultures may respond to the same natural environment in different ways, depending on their beliefs, goals, and available technologies, and possibilism helps me understand this better.

Thanks!
