ECOTOURISM

WHAT IS IT?

ECOTOURISM DESTINATIONS

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR ME?

Ecotourism Infographic- Kelly Shi

As exotic, natural environments begin to disappear, ecotourism has presented itself as a solution.

Ecotourism...

  • Promotes sustainable travel
  • Raises funds for the local economy that goes towards conservation efforts (reforestation, repopoulating endangered species)
  • Boosts employment and financial opportunities for the local people
  • Teaches local culture and builds environmental awareness
  • Allows tourists to visit the natural wonders of the world

When planning trips in the future, ecotourism destinations will definitely be on my list. I want to help towards an impactful kind of tourism. In fact, I'm planning to visit Iceland in 2022, one of the above locations. As much as ecotourism protects, it can also bring negative causes. For example, tourists can disrupt wildlife or create of carbon footprints in remote areas that requires vehicle travel. In Iceland, I should: avoid staying in an Airbnb, avoid buying bottled water, and avoid consuming whale meat (information from guidetoiceland.is).

Costa Rica is the top country associated with ecotourism. It has well-protected natural beauty like rainforests, pristine beaches, and breathtaking volcanoes that all add to the biodiversity.

Kenya has many safari adventures but also offers other landscapes like beaches, coral reefs, and mountains. It's a prime destination for ecotourism, and the country has also implemented many organizations that help protect the ecosystem.

The Galapagos Island in Ecuador is another splendid ecotourism location. Visitors can retrace the footsteps of Charles Darwin and check out the unique wildlife. It maintains a visitor system to make sure tourism remains sustainable.

Iceland has recently become a top destination for tourists. It is one of the cleanest energy consumers in the world, and visitors can reduce their footprint by camping and traveling by bike or horseback riding.

Part of Micronesia is an island nation called Palau. Its blue sea is home to coral reefs and hundreds of species of fish. The country has also made the reefs no-fishing zones in order to preserve the beautiful landscape.
