The Name

Bollywood is the name of the Hindi language film industry in Mumbai. The name 'Bollywood' comes from Hollywood + Bombay (the English name for Munbai). Mumbai Film City is one of the largest film production centres in the world and it creates between two and three films a day.

Bollywood films

The boolywood film is a musical with lots of singing and dancing. The songs are an essential part of the films. There are between six and ten songs in a film. The words of the songs are important to the plot so they are in Hindi, which most indians can understand. Professional singers record the songs and the actors in the films only pretend to sing them. The music has catchy tunes andthe dances are spectacular.

The films are very colourful with goodlooking actors and actresses who wear beautiful clothes. The plot is always romantic with a lot of melodrama. There's comedy and lots of action, but no violence, and there is always a happy ending.

How long the film?

The film tends to be quite long; the average is three hours, but the longest is LOC Kargil which is 4 hours and 35 minutes long.

Bollywood films aren't great cinema, but they are certainly feel-good movies. Indian audiences love them and Bollywood film stars have millions of fans in India and all over the world. Since the 1990s, Bollywood films have become popular outside India, especially in countries with large Asian populations.

Origins of Bollywood films

The stories go back hundreds of years to traditional Indian theatre and epic poetry. The dancing in the first film was classical Indian dance, but now there's a mix of Indian, folk, Latin and Arabic dance. In recent years, Hollywood and music television, in particular MTV, have influenced Bollywood film-making.
