CRETACEOUS PERIOD

(146-65 Million years ago)

The Cretaceous is defined as the period between 145.5 and 65.5 million years ago,* the last period of the Mesozoic Era, following the Jurassic and ending with the extinction of the dinosaurs (except birds).

The climate of the Cretaceous Period was much warmer than at present, perhaps the warmest on a worldwide basis than at any other time during the Phanerozoic Eon.

The major events of this period were:First Flowering Plants, Angiosperms (flowering plants) appeared in the fossil record more than 100 million years ago. Rise of the Rocky Mountains, Cretaceous Interior Seaway, Mass Extinction were the events of the said period.

The flowering plants (angiosperms) appeared in the Early Cretaceous, became common by the beginning of the middle of the Cretaceous, and came to represent the major component of the landscape by the mid-to-late Cretaceous.
