INTI RAYMI

Inty Raymi is an ancient Inca religious celebration as gratitude of the Andean people who offer to the Paccha Mama, for the goodness of having allowed a good production and harvest of traditional products, gratitude is celebrated with the presence of music and dance, concentrating more than a hundred native groups. It takes place every year, from June 17 to 23, and has crossed borders, since representatives of the music and dance of Andean countries, of similar ethnic characteristics, come to participate in the festival of the sun. The main character of the festa is the Aya Uma or Diablo Huma, which has an important spiritual meaning for the indigenous communities that congregate in sacred places to thank the Pachamama for the harvests. The cosmic order arrives to the festival with this character that drives away the demons that roam among the crops. In addition, the traditional pampamesa takes place, where typical food of the Andean zone is shared, such as corn, potatoes, melloco, beans and others, combined with different meats, especially guinea pig and the typical chicha.

Traditional festivals in Ecuador can be identified as ancestral or indigenous, and traditional mestizo. Among the former are the equinox and solstice festivals, which in colonial times were inserted into the Catholic calendar, such as Inti Raymi, Corpus Christi and the Yamor festival in Imbabura. On the other hand, the traditional mestizo festivals are the Diablada of Píllaro, the carnival, Easter, the pilgrimage of the Virgin of El Cisne in Loja, the pilgrimage to the Virgin of Quinche, the feast of the Mama Negra and the Pass of the Traveling Child in Cuenca, among others. In this paper we will review 3 traditional festivals and their characteristics.

dIABLADA DE PÍLLARO

La Diablada de Píllaro is a popular celebration that has grown in the last decade. According to history, in colonial times the Indians disguised themselves as devils in repudiation of the priestly preaching and the physical, psychological, economic and moral mistreatment they received from the Spaniards. The Pillareña Diablada is one of the popular festivals of Ecuador, born in the time of the Spanish colony. This cultural event, which in 2009 was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Ecuador, summons in January thousands of people who participate in the so-called "partidas" or traditional comparsas that travel, in the midst of dances and songs, rural communities to the centre of Píllaro. Local historians claim that before each parade there were six devils. They were slaves who were opening the way for their masters, who came down to the village to test their dancing virtues. Despite not knowing for sure how the Diablada was born, the mystery and seduction that has always exercised the image of this character in the popular imagination, made it popular over time to finally become the central part of the entire celebration.
