According to archeological and other evidence, swimming was practiced in Egypt as early as 2500 BCE, and later in Assyrian, Greek, and Roman cultures.
By imperial decree, swimming lessons were made compulsory in schools.

Bodysuits made of polyurethane or other non-textile fabrics had been worn by the swimmers. They were particularly beneficial to swimmers with larger bodies. However, since the suit improved some swimmers more than others, depending on their physique, it was banned.
