FORM: WRITING SENTENCES
Form: Not only (correlative conjunction) + subject 1 + but also (correlation conjunction) + subject 2 + verb
Example:
1. Not only shopping malls but also hair salons are closed in Ontario
2. Not only my computers but also smart phones are necessary for online learning.
RULES…
- There are many rules for not only/but also. You will learn one of those rules in level 5.
- Rule: We use Not only/but also at the beginning of a sentence that has two subjects.
- Why? We want to say the same thing or something similar about these two people, places or things.
- Not only Marina but also her sister Eva is pregnant.
- Your turn…

APPLY GRAMMAR TO WRITING EXAMPLE COMPARE AND CONTRAST PARAGRAPH:
Both Gordana and Rita are friends who share similarities and differences in personality, family values, and leisure activities. Gordana is a very relaxed person who does not get upset about life’s problems. On the other hand, Rita is less relaxed than her. Another commonality is their views on family. Although Gordana and Rita are from different countries, they share similar family values. She believes in extended families, and so does Rita. In addition, they have most leisure activities in common. Not only Rita but also Gordana likes dancing and listening to music. However, Gordana likes winter sports, but Rita does not. Despite their differences, they have been best friends for many years.
BOTH...AND
- Another correlative conjunction is both...and.
- It's used in a similar way to not...only/but also.
Examples: 1. Both Marina and Eva are pregnant. 2. I like both sweet and savoury food.
the conjunction goes before each of the subjects
HOWEVER...ONE DIFFERENCE
- The verb form changes...

ONE MORE DIFFERENCE...
- You can use both...and for any type of sentence unlike not only... but also. The information in the sentence DOES NOT have to be new, unexpected or a surprise.
- Both bananas and avocadoes are nutritious.
- We would not use not only but also in this example because this is a fact that everyone knows—it is not new information.
