What is a tell?

The site of Ancient Jericho, Tell-es-Sultan, is a tell site. A tell is a mound or small hill which has been built up over centuries of occupation. In this part of the world villages and towns were built and rebuilt in the same location for hundreds or even thousands of years. New buildings were built on top of the ruins of earlier settlements which led to the ground level rising. Their long history means that tell sites can tell us a huge amount about the history of everyday life at that location.

How does a tell form?

In the next slides you can learn how a tell forms over time...

Settlements usually develop at locations with access to water, good agricultural land, or access to trade routes. Ancient Jericho was built at the site of a natural oasis with many fresh-water springs.

The first houses on the site of Ancient Jericho were constructed of mud bricks.

Mud structures crumble easily when they are exposed to the elements. This meant the houses needed to be rebuilt often.

When buildings crumbled, the ruins were levelled off and new buildings were built on top…

As each generation passed, and buildings crumbled or were destroyed by man-made or natural disasters, people built and rebuilt the mudbrick houses, remodelling or even levelling the previous buildings…

The footprint of the settlement grew...
