The learning Wheel & Moodle
The Learning Wheel has been designed as a tool to support lecturers in identifying various digital methods and technologies for augmenting their Learning and Teaching Delivery, of which a large proportion is sat within Moodle (LMS) the colleges learning and teaching platform.
START
Moodle
Moodle sits at the heart of the learning and teaching delivery model. Moodle is where most of the hard work is done by lecturers to produce intuitive courses and immersive learning materials. The learning wheel is designed around digital a pedagogy and helps lecturers identify ways of integrating tools and techniques to augment their online course delivery within Moodle. With the help of the Learning Wheel you can contextualised ‘subject’ specific activities with each aligned to the five modes of engagement: Aqusition, Collaboration, Discussion, Investigation, Practice and Production.
Acquisition
Knowledge acquisition:
is the act of processing, absorbing and storing new information and being able to retrieve that information at a later date to identify how successful acquasition process has been.To process, store and retrieve information mostly depends on how well the organisation and design of the information is delivered. It also depends on how much a piece of information is relevant to the context it refers to and whether it is influenced by how the information is structured.

Moodle Forums
The Forum activity allows lecturers to create specific discussion areas in order to control the way students interact within the topic. There are 5 main forum types:
- Standard forum
- Blog like forum
- Single topic forum
- Simple discussion forum
- Q & A forum
Please see Glosssary for specilised words and definitions.
Instructional Video Moodle Forums
Please see Glosssary for specilised words and definitions.
Ideas for using forums
Ask yourself if:
- you wish to have involvement in the forum or if you want the students to lead and own the space.
- you want the forum to add value to the face to face environment or have a life of its own in its own right outside the lecture theatre / classroom or seminar room.
- you are prepared to make appropriate contributions to the discussion to:
- encourage discussion if students are quiet
help shape ideas if students begin to wander off-task.
- your role will be defined as discussions/a course progresses
you will explicitly but gradually relinquish control of the discussions.
- you will encourage and support learners to share control of discussions (for example you might ask a learner/group of learners to summarise contributions to a discussion thread/topic, or you might ask learners to initiate discussion topics)
