The sun sets in the West. --> facts or general truths.Amelia always goes shopping on Saturday. --> routines or habits (often with adverbs of frequency) Stan is a great grandfather. --> permanent states The bus to London departs at 10:05 on Friday. --> timetabled events in the future. Messi passes on to Aguero who shoots and scores! --> narratives (a story, a joke, a plot, sports commentaries)

Here I can see that some children are running around in the playground. We're moving to a bigger house next month. Now that it's August, it's getting hotter.

Present Continuous

Adrien is always boasting about his wealth. --> an annoying habit (often with always, constantly, continually and forever).Here I can see that some children are running around in the playground. --> describing what is happening in a picture. We're moving to a bigger house next month. --> plans and arrangements for the future. Now that it's August, it's getting hotter. --> situations that are changing or developing in the present.

Present Continuous

I have had the same car for twenty years.

We're ecstatic because we have won the lottery!

Martin has eaten all the crisps!

He has competed in three marathons.

It's the third time I've called you today. Where have you been?

Present Perfect Simple

I have had the same car for twenty years. --> something that started in the past and has continued until now.

We're ecstatic because we have won the lottery! --> something that happened in the past and has a result that affects the present.

Martin has eaten all the crisps! --> something that happened in the past but we don't know or say exactly when.

He has competed in three marathons. --> experiences and achievements

It's the third time I've called you today. Where have you been? --> superlatives and expressions the first/second time.

Harriet has been attending some seminars. The students are tired because they've been studying very hard. I've been living in Greece for five years. We've been discussing the current political situation.

Present Perfect Continuous

Harriet has been attending some seminars. --> actions that started in the past and are still in progress or have happened repeatedly until now. The students are tired because they've been studying very hard. --> actions that happened repeatedly in the past and have finished recently but that have results affecting the present. I've been living in Greece for five years. --> emphasising how long actions have been in progress for. We've been discussing the current political situation. --> a recent or unfinished action.
