With pop/rap, people started wearing baggy clothing such as jeans and shorts, and baseball caps backwards along with chains. Popular artists were also creating their own style which inspired young people. Leotards were worn for skating and dancing and just in general, (Bauer). Women wanted to be more like men and feel in command so they started wearing padded shoulders and vibrant colors, (Reddy).

People were forced to spend 90% of their income. The people brought low to high quality prices products. Clothing was one of them, women wore dresses, dressy sweaters and tailored pants suits, meanwhile men wore 3 piece suits with straight leg pants and medium lapel. Since people were looking for lower prices at the malls, they had the same clothing as retailers but with discounts, (Bauer).

The LGBTQ started in 1988 which inspired rainbow colors as more and more people started coming out, (Bauer). The punk goth style also came into play as the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War was coming to an end, (Reddy). People who wore punk gothic clothing could deal with criticism and judgement and often wore jean jackets, along with bright red colors, (Amilliga).

Summary of what I learned

I learned that women wanted to feel more in command so they started wearing men's clothing. The LGBTQ community also started to come out and they were able to express who they were without being afraid of being judged. I also learned that people started to wear bold color and vivid colors clothing.

The Great Depression connects with the 1980’s as fashion was influenced by popular people, such as role models. Some famous people such as Gabrielle Chanel who started her business of perfume and is still being used.

The earlier time period influenced what took place in the 1980s as it passed down different styles of fashion such as the punk, which started in the 1970’s but also lasted throughout the 1980’s.
