Biography

A new champion was born

. On his father's side Cassius Clay was of Malagasy descent and third generation American native, while on his mother's, Odessa Lee Grady, she was of African American ancestry with a white grandfather. He grew up in a context of racial segregation.

Ali began training at the age of 11. He won Olympic gold at the Rome Games in 1960 and in 1964, at the age of 22, won the world heavyweight title by surprisingly defeating the feared and powerful reigning champion Sonny Liston. Nicknamed "The Greatest", Ali has been the protagonist of some of the most important and famous events in theboxing world.

The fight against racism
