INDUS VALLEY INTRUDUCTION

The present-day countiries of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh are located on the large peninsula that extends southward from southern Asia. Geographers call the peninssula a subcontinent because of its large size and its separateness from the rest of the continent. The Indian subcontinet is seprated from the rest of Asia by a long wall of rocky, snow-capped mountains called the Himalayas. The two great rivers of the Indian subcontinent, the Indus and the Ganges, begin in the snowy peaks of the Himalayas and flow southward. It was along the Indus River that the subcontinet's earliest civilization developed. The Indus Valley Civilization is now often compared with the far more famous cultures of Egypt and Mesopotamia, but this is a fairly recent development. The roots of the Indus Valley civilization can be traced back to the site of Mehrgarh in Pakistan dated to about 7000 BC. The civilization reached its peak around 2600 BC and it went into decline around 1900 BC. It depends on what you mean. Kot Diji civilization as the start? in this case around 3000 cal BCE. The total population of the civilization is thought to have been upward of 5 million, & its territory stretched over 900 miles (1,500 km) along the Indus River. The Indus cities are noted for their urban planning, a technical and political process concerned with the use of land and design of the urban environment. They are also noted for their baked brick houses, elaborate drainage systems, water supply systems, and clusters of large, nonresidential buildings.
