CHILD
RIGHTS
non discrimination
Discrimination involves exclusion or less favorable treatment based on for example sex, skin colour, language, religion, ethnicity, social origin or disability. Discrimination has been linked to severe physical and mental problems.
Children have a right to nondiscrimination. This means that all children, without exception, should enjoy their rights to effective protection. No child should be the victim of discriminatory acts
The Convention offers a vision of the child as an individual and as a member of a family and community, with rights and responsibilities appropriate to his or her age and stage of development. By recognizing children's rights in this way, the Convention sets the focus on the whole child.
WHY IS THIS RIGHT IMPORTANT?
Children are discriminated against all the time; little girls are not treated like little boys, disabled children are not treated like non-disabled ones, rural children do not get the same opportunities as those living in the cities, migrant children do not benefit from the same rights as national children , etc.
In conclusion, non-discrimination is an integral part of the principle of equality. It ensures that no one is denied their rights because of factors such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property or birth.
