Thank goodness you’ve come! We need your help! You need to find the 4 Elemental Gems so that the sword has enough power and then defeat the fearsome dragon that is terrorizing our people…

Help us, only a person like you can do it!

Of course!

No thank you, I’ll pass

Ouch! I thought you were cool ... What will become of us?!

Hehehe, I was kidding. Ahem, of course I’ll help you

I knew you would not fail me! Thanks a lot! Here is the holy sword. Now gather the Elemental Gems to complete it and defeat the dragon.

Acids are substances that surround us in our everyday life. The uses of acids range from providing essential nutrients for our bodies to dissolving metals. Some acids are safe to handle with our bare hands or even use in food preparation. Other acids will severely burn human skin. It is important to understand how these substances can all be acids and yet have such different properties.

You won’t be worthy of the Earth Gem until you get all my questions correct. Do you dare to try? (Use the model on each page to help you)

Click on Model 1 in the potion cabinet in the top right corner to answer this question. Examine the symbols in Model 1. Match the symbol with it's correct meaning.

Electrolytes are substances that dissolve in water to produce ions in solution. The presence of ions allows a solution to conduct an electrical current. Ions may be produced because the substance that dissolves is ionic (like salt), or because the substance reacts with water to produce ions (as is the case with acids). The more ions that are formed in solution, the stronger the electrolyte. Nonelectrolytes are substances whose aqueous solutions do not contain ions and therefore do not conduct an electrical current.

The weaker the acid, the more conductive it is in solution.

The stronger the acid, the more conductive it is in solution.

Search for the correct answer to the question below: How does conductivity of each acid compare to its strength?

Keep looking!

There are more acid molecules initially in the strong acid beaker.

Search for the correct answer to the question below:

Keep looking!

There are lots of ions in the final solution of the strong acid.

There are not very many ions in the final solution of the strong acid.

Search for the correct answer to the question below: What evidence from the model explains why the stronger acid is a better conductor of electricity?

Not Here!

And now look for the gem! Hurry up!

You got the Water gem!

HI

:)

The strength of an acid (or base) is a chemical property that will NOT change with more concentrated/diluted solutions. A student states "A solution of 4 M sulfuric acid (H SO ) is a stronger acid than a 1M solution of sulfuric acid. What is the correct response to the student?

2 4

The student is correct! The 4M H SO solution is more concentrated than the IM solution and therefore stronger.

The student is not correct. H SO is a strong acid and will alwayas be a strong acid, even if the 4M solution is more concentrated than the IM solution.
