The Curious Case of Benjamin Button By: F. Scott Fitzgerald

SHORT STORY REVIEW

Benjamin Button who was born under unusual circumstances ages in reverse. As people grow older he is growing younger. He deals with many conflicts in this story especially when he meets a loved one, Daisy, and tries to pursue a romantic relationship with her. The story goes over many of his hardships, but it also goes through the good throughout his life.

IDENTITY

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance is a main theme in this story. Benjamin has to accept himself of his fate and understand that because of his reverse aging he is different from others. Others also have to learn to accept Benjamin because he is someone who does not age as anyone else

Understanding that Benjamin's appearance/age does not only have to deal with his identity. But his friends, experiences, and family all have input to how he is shaped. What he has gone through represent his identity not his physical appearance.

One can learn that accepting yourself is truly the only way to live. By Benjamin understanding his situation and making the best out of it made him have an enjoyable life. Others can learn from this because acceptance is one of the only ways one can fully enjoy themselves and their own life.

WHAT CAN BE LEARNED FROM THIS SHORT STORY?

Overall, personally I enjoyed reading about Benjamin Button and the obscure life that he was given. I would recommend this to anyone who is thinking about reading because it was an easy read and it had meaning behind the story.

MY RATING

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Directed By: David Fincher

MOVIE REVIEW

Like the short story, Benjamin is born in an unusual circumstance as he seems to age in reverse. The movie is oriented more around Daisy and the hopes of them two coming together at the correct time is what strives Benjamin to keep pushing forward in his weird life.

FAMILY

IDENTITY

In the short story it also explores the never-ending ideal of Benjamin finding himself. The theme of Benjamin realizing that his age does not solely impact who he is, is a meaningful part of this movie. The experiences that he is given and accepting his strange identity can relate to many people. Not the age in reverse, but finding oneself in a chaotic world.

In the movie it is shown that Benjamins father is startled by what Benjamin is, leaving him at an old folks home. This shows the corrupt relationship he had with his father. However, the movie also shows a loving relationship to what Daisy is to Benjamin. Family is a major theme in this movie it shows the highest of highs (starting a family), to the lowest points (getting abandoned by his own father).

In the New York Times, A.O. Scott critically acclaimed this movie as a beautiful piece of art. And in the end he was saddened to see it over, but happy that he watched it. I agree with what he wrote, this movie was put together very well and it showed the emotions and true meaning behind it. I would say that the movie portrays the book very well and I would recommend people to watch and read “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”.
