Writing an argumentation part 3: essay's structure

Now take a look at an exemplary essay again and read the comments to each part.

INTRODUCTION Should be kept fairly simple and should definitely: - catch the reader's attention (one 'focus' sentence) - restate the prompt - give the thesis statement (preview the opinion you are going to develop)

Can you pick up these elements from the essay?

BODY Should develop the idea presented in the introduction. It's constructed of paragraphs each representing an argument. A paragraph should start with a topic sentence (the main idea that will be presented), and then should be supported by reasons, examples, or personal experience.

Can you pick up these elements from the essay?

CONCLUSION In this part you should restate the thesis sentence, you should summarize the points presented in the body and show the significance of each. You might provide the last compelling reason why your opinion is correct.

Writing an argumentation part 3: essay's outline

Now let's see how the writer could outline the essay based on the requirements:

Writing an argumentation part 3: essay's parts

Read three different introductions to the given prompt. Which one is the best?

When we think about the money spent on space research there are two possible perspectives. One is of the supporters of the development of our civilization. On the other hand, some people believe that this kind of investment is obsolete, and money from such research could be better spent. Nowadays I would say that the second group is right.

Space research is an integral part of modern civilization. Certainly, this kind of scientific research needs a lot of money, and as a result, it receives criticism from those who would see better use of these investments. However, once implemented, space research has a positive influence on all of the world, and in this essay, I will try to provide arguments in favour of investing in this kind of research.

Money is very important in today's society. In prehistoric times there was no need for money, as we were exchanging products through the barter process. Nowadays however money is the basic means to satisfy our basic needs. This is why some people criticize the overuse of money and its wastage on big projects like space research. Here I will provide some arguments on how this money could be better invested.

Introduction 1- The first sentence doesn't attract attention and it reduces the scope only to two possible perspectives which sounds false. + Te writer restates the prompt. - Instead of giving the thesis statement the writer gives already personal opinion, that can not be!

Introduction 2+ The first sentence provides an observation difficult to deny and then moves directly to the polemic. In such a way the writer immediately catches the reader's attention. + The writer restates and rephrases (writes in his/her own words) the prompt. + The writer provides the thesis statement: space research brings a lot to humanity and here come arguments to why.

Introduction 3- the first sentence is just a regular statement, and the one following it is actually off-topic. - the writer doesn't really restate the prompt, and actually changes the scope. The point was to consider space research while the writer is already labelling this type of research as wastage, and moves on to talk about general aspects of helping humanity - completely off topic. - The writer provides thesis statement: arguments on how the money could be better invested. However, this statement doesn't match the prompt as the prompt was wrongly restated!
