BLOOD TYPES

definition and facts

The term blood types refers to antigenic phenotype, most often recognized by the use of appropriate antibodies and they are important when it comes to blood transfusions. If the donated blood doesn't match with the recipient's blood, serious complication or even life-threatening transfusion reactions can occur.

What is blood type?

Individuals of Type A have anti-B antibodies in their plasma that will agglutinate the erythrocytes in type B or type AB blood.

Individuals of Type B have anti-A antibodies that will agglutinate type A or type AB blood.

Type AB blood has neither anti-A nor anti-B antibodies, and has been designated the universal recipient.

Type O blood has neither A nor B antigens, and has been designated the universal donor.
