IDENTITIES AND EXCHANGES How does an age-old community face 21st century challenges?
BON COURAGE MES LOULOUS!

I. watch the video without the sound https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOfZLb33uCg 1. what community is it question of? THE AMISH 2. Order the events …5… a man is milking cows …2… a man is alone in the middle of a field, his head bent …3… a woman is knitting …4… three persons are trampling electric devices down …1… a horse is drawing a buggy …6… a man is ploughing ( plowing = US ) the field …7… a man is churning butter 3. What has the Amish got in his hand ? A BIBLE 4. Circle the adjectives that best describe their lifestyle Exhausting – stressful – wacky ( = dingue, fou fou) – dull(monotone) – mundane ( boring) – archaic – out of date 6. What can you say about tourists? Laugh at ,mock , point at ,jibe someone ( raillery) scorn 7. What do you think the video aims at? Ironical – it aims at making people laugh – criticising their lifestyle and appearnce
1/Write the portrait of an Amish : what they have/ do, what they don’t have/do THEY HAVE TO harvest grain, TO milk cows, to feed the chickens and plow, do the chores, churn butter, do hard work, sell quilts at discount price They have no cars, no electricity They have been taught discipline they have got a Bible in hand and a beard on their chin They wear hats They wear black clothes 2/ Find a detail which shows that they are non-violent. They are never aggressive even when they are mocked . They always behave well and try to be good to God so as to go to heaven. Police officers do not exist in their community because they never fight or never disagree. “A local boy kicked me in the butt last week I just smiled at him and I turned the other cheek But I ain't never punched a tourist even if he deserved it An Amish with a 'tude? ( = attitude = bad behavior) You know that's unheard of” They have no cops and “ don't fight, […] but all play nice” 3/ Find a detail which shows that they don’t like modern things. They have no lights, no motorcar , no traffic lights, no electricity and obviously there's no phone, 4/ find a detail which shows that they are close to nature. They live like “ Robinson Crusoe” in a primitive way. 5/ Find a detail which shows that it’s not fun living in the Amish Paradise. “If you come to visit, you'll be bored to tears” “There's no time for sin and vice” “On my knees day and night, scorin' points for the afterlife” “But you'd probably think it bites (// it sucks) Livin' in an Amish paradise” They don’t have time to have any leisure activities or just to be lazy and relax. They are obliged to work to feed themselves and they know that most people would not like sharing their life
Now is the song honest with the Amish ? 6/ When was the last time they had a party ? party like it's 1699 7/ When was the last time they paid their telephone bill? 300 years 8/ Is this realistic ? Why not ? 1620 Mayflower – Pilgrm father settled in the North of the USA Alexander Graham Bell was awarded the first U.S. patent for the invention of the telephone in 1876. US founded 4th July 1776 9/ The author says they are technologically impaired . Why is this pejorative ? “impaired” suggests the members of the Amish community are handicapped, diminished. They are not ABLE to be any different. The parody means Amish people are not intelligent enough to understand anything about new technologies
