Australia
Australia is one of the largest countries in the world, but it is also the smallest continent. Australia lies between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean.
Australia has a population of nearly 26 million. Australia is made up of six states: Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. The capital city of Australia is Canberra.
Australia takes up a whole continent. The interior of the country is a dry area. Not many people live there. It is known as the Outback, or “bush.” The western half of the continent has many deserts, including the Great Victoria Desert and the Great Sandy Desert.
Along the Australian coast is the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef. It is nearly 2,300 km long. It's so big it can be seen from SPACE!
There are at least 300 types of hard coral on the reef. Other animals include sponges, worms, snails, lobsters, prawns, jellyfish, and giant clams.
The UNESCO declared the Great Barrier Reef a World Heritage!
People in Australia speak English. The Australian accent, though, is very characteristic!
The flag of Australia has got Union Jack (British flag), a large white seven-pointed star (the Commonwealth Star) and a representation of the Southern Cross constellation.
WAIT WHAT?! UNION JACK??? COMMONWEALTH????
Australia is a member of Commonwealth of Nations. It means that it used to be a territory of the British Empire. Australia has a monarch (king or queen), but it also has a government that is elected by the people. Elizabeth II is the queen of Australia. Scott Morrison is the Prime Minister.
And since Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia, when you go to Australia you pay with Australian dollars with her image on them!
The tallest mountain in Australia is Mount Kosciuszko. It is 2228 metres above sea level. The mountain was named by the Polish explorer Paweł Strzelecki in 1840.
River Murray is the longest river in Australia. It is 2740 kilometres long.
