CAN WE CONVERT AN INDEPENDENT CLAUSE INTO A DEPENDENT CLAUSE? TRUE FALSE
What do you think? Independent? Dependent?Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz it was very noisy
BOTH CLAUSES ARE INDEPENDENT. But when we add a subordinate conjunction, this actually changes. EXAMPLE: When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz, it was very noisy. Now: When Jim studied in the Sweet Shop for his chemistry quiz (DEPENDENT) it was very noisy (INDEPENDENT)
SubordinatingConjunctions
Definition and Usage
¨A conjunction is a connecting word or phrase; a subordinating conjunction is a connecting word or phrase that introduces a dependent clause and joins it to a main clause or independent clause.¨ (1)
Examples:
"If you want to change the world, start with yourself." -Mahatma Gahndi "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." -Anonymous ¨Since Robin refused to wear his seat belt, Batman has banned him from the Batmobile.¨ - Catherine Traffis
How to spot a subordinated conjunction
1. Found in sentences containing two clauses: an independent or main clause and a dependent clause.2. Must come at the beginning of a dependent clause. 3. In most sentences, as long as the subordinating conjunction precedes the dependent clause, clause order does not matter.
TIME ORDER WORDS
Words to demonstrate a period of time based on an action or event.
TIME CLAUSES
A time clause (clause with a time word) can come in front of a main clause, or follow a main clause.
After I finished my work, I played with my daughter. I played with my daughter after I finished my work.
SUBORDINATED CONJUNCTIONS: EXPRESSING TIME
WHILE
WHEN
‘during the time that, or at the same time as’ (5)
‘at the time that’ (3)
To show that actions or events happen at the same time in the past, present or future.
Something happens just after something else occurs.

WHEN VS. WHILE
Both while and when are used when two things happen at the same time, but we tend to use while with two continuous actions and when with two single actions or ages. Let's watch the following video...
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Mauris sodales id elit et ultricies. Etiam ac purus in lorem vestibulum mattis sed at sem. Pellentesque eget urna venenatis felis accumsan sollicitudin tempor in elit.
AFTER
BEFORE
‘later than’ and ‘next in time or place’.
Something happened first
We commonly use before with the past simple tense. It suggests that the second event happened soon after the first one. The before clause, which indicates the second action, can be at the end or at the beginning of the sentence. (7)
What happened after something occurred.

AS SOON AS
UNTIL
Something happens after a completed action
indicates when something will happen, begin, or end.
To connect an action or an event to a point in time. (8)
We use as soon as to show that something happens immediately. At the very moment another action is completed, or shortly after another action is completed. (9)
