JAMmINg out!

J- Japanese Imperialism: Japan, which was a feeble military force before WWI, is desperate to become an international empire. Decide to invade China, specifically Manchuria and Nanking, in search of natural resources. - a flagrant breach of the League of Nations - a genocide of tens of thousands of people. A- Appeasement: This was the official foreign policy of France and Great Britain during the 1930s- right before WWII. M- Munich Conference/Agreement: Meeting of Great Britain, France, Germany, and Italy to address Hitler's desire to annex parts of Czechoslovakia (Sudetenland). Hitler was given permission to annex those regions (appeasement). Agreement states that Germany is free to take the Czech regions as long as all other foreign boundaries are respected. However this was a complete fail because 6 months later Hitler fully invades all of Czechoslovakia & Poland. m- I- Invasion of Ethiopia: Mussolini's Plan for restoration of the Roman Empire. Italy invades Ethiopia breaking previously set treaty though the use of tanks, heavy artillery, and poisonous gas. N- Non-Agression Pact: Agreement signed between Hitler and Stalin agreeing to peace between Germany and the USSR, which angered Britian and France. g- o- u- t-

Pearl Harbor

Battle of Guadalcanal

Battle of Stalingrad

Attack on Pearl Harbor

Pearl Harbor was the most important American naval base in the Pacific located on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, west of Honolulu. On the morning of December 7, 1941, 183 aircraft of the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor. There were many reasons for the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. For example, Japan had a large need for natural resources such as oil, minerals, and steel as they were trying to expand in Asia and the Pacific. Simiar to Japan's interest of natural resources, the United States wanted those same resources. In response to Japan's aggression, the U.S. congress placed restrictions on doing business with Japan, leading to the second reason for Japan's attack. Lastly, Japan wanted to exand in the Pacific, but when President Roosevelt moved the US Pacific Fleet from California Pearl Harbor, they saw this as a threat. Consequently to the attack on Pearl Harbor, 18 U.S. warships had been sunk or damaged and 188 aircraft destroyed. Most importantly, 2,403 American Servicemen and women were killed.

Battle of Guadalcanal

Guadalcanal is an island in South Pacific Ocean located to the Northeast of Australia. The Solomon Islands lie in the center of shipping lanes in the Pacific. The Japanese Navy made the island of Guadalcanal the center square of the pacific. Gaining territory of the Solomons was extremely important because whoever controls the Solomons controls the war. That being said, on August 7, 1942, the U.S. attacked Guadalcanal. This marked the first time the U.S. attacked the Japanese forces. Japan was forced to retreat and this was the first time that Japan lost land in WWII. As a result, Japan lost 24,000 men, while the Americans sustained 1,600 killed and 4,200 wounded. In addition to several deaths from maleria and other diseases.

Battle of Stalingrad

The Battle of Stalingrad is considered to be one of the greatest battles of WWII. This is because it marked a turning point in the war and tremendously weakened Germany's military. The Soviets accomplished this by successfully stopping Hitler’s forces from invading USSR. Lastly, this battle was the first major German loss during World War II.
