BASIC INFORMATION

Down's syndrome is a genetic disorder, caused by an extra copy of the 21st chromosome

They are charachterized by some intellectual disability and recognizable facial traits

In 1866, John L. Down noticed the realtion between the syndrome and genetics. In 1958, the causes of the syndrome were discovered.

INCIDENCE IN POPULATION

The incidence of this syndrome in the population, overall, is 15 every 10,000 births. This number varies depending on the age of the mother. The older the mother, the higher the propabilities are for the child to suffer from the syndrome.

PREVENTION TREATMENT

There is nowadays, no way to prevent a mother from having a child with Down syndrome.

To this day, there is no treatment to 'cure' this syndrome, and there won't be any until the far future. However, you can easily stregthen the brain development of the child in his early years of life.

OTHER FACTORS

Apart from the genetic inheritance factor, there are several external factors that increase the probability of Down Syndrome. Like teh age of the parents, the region of residency or their exposure to chemicals.
