How do we make comparatives and superlatives?

We look at how many syllables the adjective has.

One-syllable adjectives

tall old long

the tallest the oldest the longest

taller than... older than... longer than...

Superlative form: We add - EST

Comparative form: We add - ER

One-syllable adjectives ending in -e

large nice

larger than... nicer than...

the largest the nicest

Superlative form: we add -ST

Comparative form: we add -R

One-syllable adjectives ending in a single consonant with a single vowel before it (CVC)

bigger than... thinner than... fatter than

big thin fat

the biggest the thinnest the fattest

Comparative form: double the consonant + ER

Superlative form: double the consonant + EST

One or two-syllable adjectives ending inconsonant + -Y

drier than... happier than... angrier than

dry happy angry

the driest the happiest the angriest

Comparative form: eliminate Y, add -IER

Superlative form: eliminate Y, add + IEST

Most two- or more syllable adjectives

more modern than... more famous than... more expensive than...

Superlative form: THE MOST + adjective

Two-syllable adjectives ending in -ER, -LE, or -OW
