The ON BOARD Project

The Educational Innovation Network (EIN) is ON BOARD Good Practice, a city project developed by Viladecans (Spain) that fosters innovation in education by promoting cooperation among local stakeholders: public administrations, teachers, students, families, businesses and other members of the community. ON BOARD is an URBACT Programme Transfer Network co-financed by the ERDF to support cities sharing the knowledge and the experience based on Viladecans’ Educational Innovation Network (EIN) so it can be adapted and transferred to other EU cities. ON BOARD has provided the opportunity to cities to exchange and learn from each other’s education initiatives and experiences. .

" The Educational Innovation Network is very relevant to our city, because it allows various agents (educational and non-educational) to coordinate efforts in order to provide better conditions for a more innovative and dynamic school, offering opportunities to students, which otherwise they would not have access to".

Catarina Mendes,Albergaria Deputy Mayor

The journey

Conclusions

A learning community of education innovators

The URBACT Local Group (ULG) has been created to boost the process of adapting the Educational Innovation Network in the local context with a 360º education vision: everyone educates all the time and everywhere. It is a group of local agents representing the administration, teachers, families, companies, entities, and other actors with a potential education role in the city.

The journey

Conclusions

The Project

Albergaria’s initial expectations at the joining of ON BOARD Transfer Network was to engage in a project that involved all local agents to explore new democratic alternatives in education, making every local actor participate in the local Education Strategy. Additionally, the exchange of good ideas and practices with other cities is very important to learn and see new ways to improve our strategy and adapt them to our reality.

What was expected?

The journey

Conclusions

The Project

Keeping the Educational Innovation Network cohesive and in constant work and offer financial sustainability considering that it is supported almost exclusively by the Municipality, depends on political options.

Barriers & Difficulties

What difficulties did we encounter?

Economic resources to implement some innovations; resistance of an aged faculty; gaps in digital literacy.

The continuity of the Education Network must be fostered on an ongoing basis in order to keep agents involved. It requires ensuring dynamism the partnership though project implementation.

To continue to build and contribute to the strengthening of relations between the school and the surrounding community.

The journey

Conclusions

The Project

ON BOARD method of exchange and learning has helped to develop the EIN in Albergaria in many ways:

The most relevant changes are professional and cultural, it is easier to see that different stakeholders can work together in order to accomplish a better education in our city

Our school community was able to learn about projects from other local partners and also provide our own views and feedback for improvement.

What have we achieved?

LEARN TOGETHER: these are the two most important words in the ON BOARD project for us, as we came to know early on.

Enrich the reflection around the question of the well-being of students, their social and psycho-social accompaniment, and their integral development.

Factors that enabled the transfer of the Good Practice

The commitment, support and the involvement of our politicians. The political leadership of this project was held by our Deputy Mayor, Catarina Mendes.

The commitment of our local stakeholders to create our “Educational tribe”.

The Municipality already was implementing some projects is this area, so we already were working with some of the stakeholders that we now have ON BOARD.

The journey

The Project

Collective learnings

New approaches and mindsets towards education.

Educational innovation topics, tools, methods, skills to implement innovative projects using tech and digital tools in the classroom.

Joint learning, planning and implementing it in education and the importance that roles that non-teaching stakeholders can play in local education

The journey

The Project

What have been the transfer results? What has been a success? What would you recommend? What would you do different?

Conclusions

The journey

The Project

What have been the transfer results?

The most important result was learning together, to work together in Education Innovation and as a ULG member Ricardo Pinhão (Businessmen) stated “Looks like we are creating a tribe!”

The appropriation of new methodologies and tools by the school community of Albergaria-a-Velha and the collaborative work with all partners involved.

The involvement and commitment of several partners promotes their participation, activates the feeling of belonging and expands their role, promoting a greater sense of being part of the solution and accountability in the educational process.

Conclusions

The journey

The Project

What has been a success?

Implementation of the pilot projects Real classroom lab and Smart brain in our City.

The possibility to share some projects that are developed in our city and see them being adapted and implemented in other cities.

The ON BOARD project made it possible to learn about other successful initiatives from other European cities, to be developed and adapted to Albergaria-a-Velha

Conclusions

The journey

The Project

What would you recommend?

The Municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha would highly recommend securing the City Council and politicians support and to assure the necessary funds.

Conclusions

The journey

The Project

What would you do different?

The Municipality of Albergaria-a-Velha would like to see other stakeholders involved, such as students and associations at the very beginning, but we believe that we will accomplish this in the coming future.
