CAUSES OF PLASTIC OVERCONSUMPTION:

  • Plastic is used almost everywhere

Plastics are the most accessible and available items in today's world. Plastics are cheap, easy to make, and durable. For these reasons, this is what make plastics a great threat of pollution. Plastics are used as packaging materials, in household products, plastic bottles, plastic bags, cans and more …

Definition and causes

What is plastic pollution?

Plastic pollution occurs when plastic has accumulated in an area and has started to negatively impact the natural environment and create problems for plants, wildlife, and even the human population. This often includes killing plants and posing a danger to local animals.

  • Urbanization and Population Growth

Increasing urbanization and population growth rate is responsible for plastic pollution.

With increasing population and urban growth, the demand for cheaper and more available materials increases.

In most urban areas, plastics make up the majority of landfills and make up about 80% of all municipal waste.

  • Naval and fishing industry

The shipping and fishing industry also contributes to plastic pollution in the oceans. Remote rural beaches tend to have plastic garbage from boats, maritime accidents, and nets used for fishing, which are usually made of plastic.

These plastics leach toxins into the water that affect marine wildlife in various ways and can also be ingested by sea creatures. In water, plastic waste takes years to decompose, slowly damaging marine wildlife and even killing it when ingested.

  • Slow decay rate

Plastics take many years to break down due to the chemical bonds that simply make them last. The simplest plastics take at least 50 years to decompose, while complex plastics take between 100 and 600 years to decompose.

The EPA (Encuesta de población activa) also stated that "every piece of plastic ever made still exists." That means that as long as new plastics continue to be made, they will continue to exist all over the planet, contributing to plastic pollution.

Historical analysis, link with climate change

Definition :We define climate change as the modification of the climate that has taken place relative to its history on a regional and global scale. In general, these are changes of a natural order, but currently, they are associated with the human impact on the planet. It is a complex phenomenon with many variables

Evolution of the pollution of plastics

John W. Hyatt

  • The beginning of plastic

The first plastic was parkesin, invented by the English chemist Alexander Parkes in 1862. It was essentially nitrocellulose softened with vegetable oils and camphor. The American John W. Hyatt discovered the fundamental role of camphor in plasticization and called the substance celluloid.

The rise of plastic

The global production of plastics has exploded in the last 50 years, and especially in the last decades. In fact, in the last ten years we have produced more plastic than in the entire history of mankind.

In Spain,

of plastic bottles.

Consequences with regard to Natural resourcces

It is estimated that more than 10 million tons of plastic reach our seas and oceans each year, causing, among other damages: Threats to aquatic life: entanglement and restriction of movement, laceration, infection or suffocation.

The natural resources that we could use instead of plastic

To reduce plastic using natural materials we can use paper for example in the shopping bags or you can reuse the plastic bags. We can also use glass for the bottles. It is better and healthier and it also reduces the plastic bottles.

PHILIPPINES

GERMANY

china

In China, more than 31 tons of plastic are discarded every day, of which 74% are not managed correctly: among the 10 rivers that carry more than 90% of the plastic that ends up in the oceans

In the case of the Philippines, it is estimated that 20 percent of plastic waste reaches the sea, that is, about 550,000 tons per year

Germany, despite being a recycling leader, is the largest consumer of plastic packaging that pollutes rivers and seas.

Ideas to reuse plastics

1 Do not use plastic straws, use bamboo straws. 2 Do not use plastic bags, better a cloth one.

3 Do not buy prepackaged food, its better if you bring your own packaging. 4 For hangers use wooden pegs and not plastic.

5 Be careful and recycle well in containers. 6 Avoid things that have microplastics.

7 Chewing gum contains microplastics and tries to throw it into the container , chew organic gum then into the appropriate container. 8 Reuse plastic bottles.

10 Use matches. 11 Use cloth diapers, they are more ecological and will not pollute.

12 Do not use disposable razors. 13 Use a menstrual cup instead of desposable feminine hygiene products, the cup is reusable and you can use it as many times as you want.

14 Have your own cup of cafe so you don't have to use a newsingle use cup every day. 15 Also use cotton bags for any purchase. 16 Never cover fresh produce in plastic, use reusable canvas bags. 17 Say no to plastic that brushes for your hair, an ecological wooden one is better. 18 It is not necessary to waste 10 cotton rounds each time you clean your face, use washable and reusable wipes to avoid the consumption of plastic for each envelope and we would also save cotton which is never a bad thing to save.
