the problem
Unattended waste in the Ocean like plastics, fishing nets and others are harmful to the environment and the ecosystem.
project background
02
Two surfers from Australia, Andrew Turton and Pete Cleginski created a project to help fix this problem before it's too late. The project is called Seabin. Together, both of them engineered a device that helps clean out waste in the ocean while keeping sustainability and affordability in mind.
03
how it works?
A bucket-shaped device is fitted with a 25,000 LPH Pump at the bottom which sucks in water and waste from the surface. The waste will be filtered by a catch bag that supports up to 20 kg of waste, clean water is then expelled through the bottom of the device back into the ocean.
04
engineering features
- Catch bag: holds 20kgThe catch bag can hold the enormous amount of waste before the staff remove the waste -Capture micro plastics > 2mmmicro plastic like microfibre which hard to seen on naked eye can be captured-Reusable catch bagCatch bag can be used various times without changing and going to waste- Recycle component The component of the seabin can be recycle and efficiently used on other machine or purpose
sustainabilityprinciples
01
environment
The Seabin cleans the ocean from waste while at the same time, the Seabin itself does not produce any waste like harmful gases or liquid waste. The Seabin is also made up of environmentally friendly materials and it can be used for a long time.
02
economic
The cost of one Seabin is around €3,300 (RM16,000). Eventhough it costs a lot for one, it is made out of environmentally safe materials. Also, it can be used for a long time. Conversely, while it collects waste from the sea, particularly plastic, the plastic can be recycled or upcyled in recycling centres. The Seabin is a good long term investment that may help generate passive income while at the same time does not cause harm to the environment.
03
social
Through this project, Seabin has cleaned up plastic waste in the oceans across the globe. They have cleaned around 1.9 Million kg of waste in the ocean. They also created awareness for this generation to appreciate and be responsible from throwing waste into the ocean, so that future generations can enjoy the beaches and sea life as we do now.
reflection
Seabin provided a simple solution to numerous problems upon the sea pollution. The Seabin offer the sustainable development as it is an ocean garbage bin that been deployed to capture plastic on the sea 24 hours per day with minimal power usage and maintenance. The Seabin can help achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as it helps Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Goal 14 (Life Below Water). The Seabin can be used to restore the biodiversity and ecosystem of the ocean by reducing the plastic waste on the ocean.
