Australia
Australia is one of the largest countries in the world, but it is also the smallest continent. Located south of Asia, Australia lies between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Off the southeastern coast is the island of Tasmania.
Australia has a population of nearly 26 million. Australia is made up of six states: Western Australia, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. The capital city of Australia is Canberra.
Australia is the only nation that takes up a whole continent. The interior of the country is a vast, dry area where few people live. It is known as the Outback, or “bush.” The western half of the continent is a plateau with several deserts, including the Great Victoria Desert and the Great Sandy Desert.
Along the northeastern coast is the world’s largest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef. It extends 2000 kilometers from north to south. It's so big it can be seen from SPACE!
The sea life of the reef is extraordinary. The reef has been formed over millions of years from the skeletons of millions of tiny corals. There are at least 300 types of hard coral on the reef. Other animals include sponges, anemones, worms, snails, lobsters, crayfish, prawns, jellyfish, and giant clams. Certain types of algae give the reef a purplish red rim.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the Great Barrier Reef a World Heritage!
People in Australia speak English. The Australian accent, though, is very characteristic!
The flag of Australia is based on the British maritime Blue Ensign – a blue field with the United Kingdom flag (Union Jack) in the canton or upper hoist quarter – augmented with a large white seven-pointed star (the Commonwealth Star) and a representation of the Southern Cross constellation, made up of five white stars – one small five-pointed star and four, larger, seven-pointed stars.
WAIT WHAT?! UNION JACK??? COMMONWEALTH????
Australia is a member of Commonwealth of Nations. It means that it used to be a territory of the British Empire. Australia is also a constitutional monarchy. It has a monarch (king or queen), but it also has a government that is elected by the people. Elizabeth II is the queen of Australia. Scott Morrison is the Prime Minister.
And since Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia, when you go to Australia you pay with Australian dollars with her image on them!
The tallest mountain in Australia is Mount Kosciuszko. It is 2228 metres above sea level. The mountain was named by the Polish explorer Paweł Strzelecki in 1840, in honour of Polish-Lithuanian freedom fighter General Tadeusz Kościuszko.
River Murray is the longest river in Australia. It is 2740 kilometres long.
