"The simple past tense is only used to say that something happened at some time in the past". (1)
"The past continuous tense is mainly used to talk about past events that were in progress at a particular point of time in the past". (1)
EXAMPLES: I was reading at 6 yesterday evening. She was getting ready for school at 9.30 yesterday morning. I was reading at 6 yesterday evening. She was getting ready for school at 9.30 yesterday morning.
EXAMPLES: I drank a beer at the Chinese restaurant yesterday. She forgot to call me in the morning. He went to visit her aunt in Guayaquil. I flew to Miami last year. I meet my sister's hudband during my trip to Argentina.
USAGE:
- Talk about events happening at the same time that something important happened in the past.
USAGE:
- Finished events in the past.
- Commonly use past time adverbs like yesterday, last week, last year etc.
We use a simple past sentence to express an action that happened in the middle of a longer action in past continuous sentence. (1)
EXAMPLES: She was taking a shower when her boyfriend called. ** We use the past continuous tense to refer to the longer background action (taking a shower), and the simple past tense to refer to the shorter action that happened in the middle (boyfriend called). They were playing videogames when the police knocked at the door.
01
interrupted actions
When we are talking about two longer actions that were in progress at the same time, we use the past continuous tense in both clauses. (1)
EXAMPLES: She was taking a shower while her boyfriend was ordering pizza. ** Both actions were happening at the same time: (taking a shower) (boyfriend was ordering pizza). Jenna and Tim were making breakfast while Jimmy was reading the newspaper.
