"Jojo Rabbit"

Directed by: Taika Waititi Release Date: November 8th, 2019

Jojo Rabbit is an indepedent film from the amazing director, Taika Waititi who is most known for his creative ways of involving comedy to shine lights on real life problems. In this film the audience follows Jojo Betzler, an aspiring member of the Hitler youth and his imaginary friend, Hitler. Through the film it covers very serious social issues in this time frame such as, Nazism, the Holocaust, and the unbelievable mindset Hitler gave the Germans towards Jews.

Reality of Nazism

Hitler Youth

Hitler's Influence

In the time of the Nazi uprising the Hitler Youth was created. In the movie Jojo is seen going to one of the camps they had to learn about the organization and the kids attending are shown from a young age what the "superior" race is and what "being a German" was all about.

Jojo Rabbit covers and shows the unbeliveable thoughts that Germans shared towards Jews and what they thought they were like. One example in the movie is when Jojo asks Elsa to help him with his Jew 'detection" book.

Even with this film being an independent comedy, there are very serious topics being covered, and an example from the movie showig the true horrors of this time is when Jojo and his mom are walking through the street and they come across a public hanging post.

Humor in Jojo Rabbit

When dealing with such a serious subject such as the Holocaust and what happened surrounding this matter, humor is not a word that usually comes up in conversation. Contrary to this belief, the film uses ironic humor can give and uses it as a guide for the audience to see the true horrors from a different visual view. This quote best represents the comedic route Taika decided to take as it adresses the serious matter of the boys learning how to be soilders at such a young age through calling them "war games" and using this as a way to see the Holocaust from the eyes and ears of a little boy growing up in this time.

"Today you boys will be involved in such activities as war games, ambush techniques, and blowing stuff up"

Why use humor?

Interview

What I have gathered from this interview is that he is not trying to bring light to the massacare but show how wrong the Nazi's were and how and awarness to the situation so history does not repeat.

Example of Humor

I chose this clip because it shows both humor and the true weight the Holocaust had on a family that share a roof but very different beliefs.

Although this film uses comedy as its main form of viewing media outsource, with the topic being so serious the film does show the true guts and nature of the Holocaust and how it affected families and the country.

Relevance

Based on true event

While there is no real Jojo Rabbit, the events and history behind the film did happen. The Holocaust and Nazis were very much real and this film makes sure to hit those historic facts and include them in the film. Relating it to today, families living in today's society had loved ones that went through this tragic encounter and this film was made to show that this should never happen again and history needs to be learned to prevent another uprising.

This image highlights the true meaning of the film which had to do with the unsettling Nazi movement
