Definition of this axe

Art and power : two words that don’t seem to naturally fit together. Power conveys a sense of influence, drama, action, and suggests a variety of intense images – the roar of rockets, waves crashing against a rocky shoreline, … In contrast, for many of us, art conjures images of contemplation in a quiet museum, beautiful landscapes with soft pastel tones that comfortably immerse us into a relaxing place or moment. Yet, throughout the annals of time and history, there is a continual evidence : words and images are powerful. Art through centuries (including painting, sculpture, speech, cinematography, photograph, literature, music ...) has shown a persistent power to impact and influence human emotions and perceptions by making people feel and think, and to directly impact or influence a range of endeavors and events ...

Voices from America : How is Hip-Hop connecting people ?

Link with the axe :

Rap music

Rap music is a major music genre and a highly commercialized business, very successful in the entire planet. A great power of rap music is to unify and connect people. A lot of people love rap music because it’s very entertaining : it makes people dance, clap and foot tap. Hence, they gather around the rapper and create a community. There is, in the roots of rap music, a spirit of protest : it originally allowed underrepresented black teenagers to express themselves, and to feel better. Today rap music remains extremely meaningful : it conveys a message or promotes values that can be very wise. There is always a message behind the lyrics that can denounce poverty, city life, violence in bad areas, violence against women, racism, … Therefore, rap music is a way to impact people on a worldwide scale and make a change in society. For example, a lot of rappers denounce police violences against black community in the US, saying that “Words are better” than violence. In addition, rap music is mainly listened by young people. So it’s a way to educate, uplift, enrich them with different opinions. Rappers can be role models for young people. For example, Kendrick Lamar is committed to a mentoring program in which he helps children. He acts as a role model to those children because he began like those young people and managed to succeed in his life.
