What is a Paragraph?
A paragarph is a group of sentences. It has a main idea and sentences that support the idea.
A paragarph is a collection of sentences that describe, discuss, or explain one central idea.
The three main parts of a paragraph are:
- the topic sentence
- the supporting detail sentences
- the concluding sentence
Four Features of a Good Paragraph
1 The first line of a paragraph is indented.
2 A paragraph has a topic sentence that state the main idea.
3 All of the sentences in a paragraph are about one topic.
4 A paragraph ends with a concluding sentence that brings the paragraph to a logical end.
The Topic Sentence
A topic sentence tells the reader the main idea or thought that the writer is trying to express.
- It is a one-sentence summary of the entire paragraph.
- Each sentence that follows helps to develop the idea presented in the topic sentence.
The organization of a paragraph is based on the topic sentence.

Supporting sentences describe, explain, clarify, or give examples of the main idea in the topic sentence.
They answer questions such as who? What? When? Where? and How?
They explain the topic sentence in greater detail and give the reader more information.

Concluding Sentence
A Concluding sentence concludes or wraps up a paragraph.
A concluding sentence has three main features:
1. It is usually the last sentence of a paragraph.
2. It lets the reader know that the paragraph has ended.
3. It brings the paragraph to a logical conclusion by:a. restating the main idea of the topic sentence. b. offering a suggestion, giving an opinion, or making a prediction.

A Fragment - An Incomplete Sentence
- A sentence without a subject or without a verb is called a Fragment.
- It is a piece of sentence. It is not a complete sentence.
Bora is my brother. Works at ABA bank. (no subject) Bora is my brother. He works at ABA bank. Many people a white car. (no verb)Many people have white car.
A Fragment is a serious mistake in writing. When you write, check each sentence to make sure there is a subject and a verb.
