Ernest Tupes, Raymond Christal, and Warren Norman proposed that there were five recurring factors in Cattell's sixteen: Surency, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Culture, Emotional Stability.
Sir Francis Galton applied the Lexical Hypothesis which states that words are inherently "expressive of character."
Raymond Cattell developed factor analysis, a technique used to investigate variability. This led to 16 Fundamental Factors.
