Present Continuous

for future arragements

We use the present continuous to refer to the future when we talk about plans and arrangements that have already been made.

  • We are moving to London in June.
  • We are going to the cinema at seven o'clock.
  • Yusuf isn't flying to Cairo tomorrow morning.
  • I'm not going out tonight.
  • Aren't you playing tennis on Sunday?
  • Are you going to Tom's today?

We don’t use the present continuous when we predict something. Instead, we use going to or will:

  1. It’s going to rain again soon.
  2. I don't think he'll come tonight.

For future actions or situations using the present continuous, all the common future time words and phrases can be used:

  • today
  • tonight
  • this afternoon
  • this evening
  • this week
  • tomorrow
  • tomorrow morning
  • tomorrow evening
  • next week
  • next month
  • in five minutes
  • in ... hours/days/weeks/months
  • at six o'clock
  • after school
  • the day after tomorrow, etc.
