What are they and how do they work?
Relative clauses are parts of a sentence. We use them to describe something or someone in more detail. We need different relative pronouns for them: who for persons or that for things and animals. But there are even more relative pronouns...

There is one more special case - the contact clause

Relative clause with a relative pronoun
If the relative pronoun is followed by a verb, it must not be left out! You always have to use the correct relative pronoun in such cases! Mr Basket is a teacher who teaches English.
If the relative pronoun is followed by a noun or pronoun, it can be left out. English is a subject that everybody loves. --> English is a subject everybody loves.
