Ethnography of communication
With this study, Hymes "proposed an ethnographic framework which takes into account the various factors that are involved in speaking" (Wardhaugh, 2006, p. 247).

Setting: the physical circumstances in which speaking takes place. Scene: the cultural definition of the occasion.
Participants: includes various combinations of speaker-listener, addressor-addressee or sender-receiver.
Ends: the recognized and expected outcomes of the exchange and the personal goals of each participant.
Act sequence: refers to the actual form and content of what is said; the words, how they are used, and their relationship with the topic.

Key: the tone, manner or spirit in which a particular message is conveyed. It is marked by non-verbal behavior (gestures, posture)
Norms of interaction and interpretation: specific behaviors and properties attached to speaking and how they are viewed by someone who does not share them.
Refers to the choice of channel (oral, written, telegraphic ot the actual forms of speech employed.
Refers to the demarcated types of utterance.
