COMPARING THINGS THAT ARE DIFFERENT

COMPARATIVES

COMPARING TWO PEOPLE, TWO ANIMALS, TWO THINGS OR TWO GROUPS OF PEOPLE, ANIMALS OR THINGS

The comparative in English can be of majority, of equality and of minority.

COMPARATIVES OF EQUALITY

AS + adjectives/adverbs* + AS

(*any adjectives or adverbs)

e.g.: I'm as tall as you. She speaks English as well as me.

I and she are the 1st terms of comparison while you and me are the 2nd ones.

COMPARATIVES OF MINORITY

LESS + adjective/adverb* + THAN

(*any adjectives or adverbs)

e.g. You are less kind than him.

You is the 1st term of comparison while him is the 2nd one.

COMPARATIVES OFMAJORITY

We must do a distinctionbetween "short" adjectives/adverbs and "long" adjectives/adverbs

SHORT* ADJECTIVE/ADVERB + ER + THAN

*ONE SYLLABLE

OLD - OLDERFAST - FASTER

e.g. Ted is older than Bob

aDJECTIVES ENDING IN -E ADD -R

CUTE - CUTERRARE - RARER

e.g. My puppy is cuter than yours

aDJECTIVES ENDING IN consonant + vowel + consonant double final consonant + -eR

BIG - BIGGERTHIN - THINNER

e.g. She is fatter than me

aDJECTIVES ENDING IN -y and adverb early change -y to -i + -eR

EASY - EASIEREARLY - EARLIER

e.g. Beth is sillier than her sister

MORE ++ LONG* ADJECTIVES/ADVERBS + + THAN

*2 OR MORE SYLLABLES

EXPENSIVE - MORE EXPENSIVEPEACEFULLY - MORE PEACEFULLY

e.g. Mum is more beautiful than me

TWO SYLLABLES ADJECTIVE ENDING IN -ER and -OW ADD -ER or USE MORE + ADJECTIVE

CLEVER - CLEVERER / MORE CLEVERNARROW - NARROWER / MORE NARROW

e.g. I'm cleverer/more clever than you

IRREGULAR COMPARATIVES

GOOD - BETTERBAD - WORSE FAR - FURTHER /FARTHER

Use than after the adjective or the adverb!
