TODAY'S AGENDA
A brief discussion about our last PLC Meeting (
What is context?
What is co-text?
Useful sites
Welcome to our 3rd PLC Meeting “Lexis: The Context/Co-Text Effect”. We are going to explore the ways in which we can create emotionally-charged events when teaching lexis. By now, we will have realised that after a lexis lesson our students will have retained some words and lost others. Why does that happen? How can we avoid that?
For Example a key to a door a key on a keyboard or a key to solve the problem The words door, keyboard, and the problem are co-text of the word “ key”
Co-text and Context
Context
Co-text
– the linguistic environment of a word
– the non-verbal environment in which a word is used
vs
Context
__the surrounding situation in which a word is used is its context. For Example If I were teaching the word goal in context I could use images to evoke the life of a man who overcame difficulties in order to achieve his goals.
NELSON MANDELA"It always seems impossible until it's done." he achieved his goals with dedication and determination.
mustafa kemal atatürk “No victory is a goal. Victory is a major means to achieve a greater purpose than itself.”
Co-text
__the surrounding words is its co-text.For Example To be able to use the word goal in English, learners would have to know the verbs that commonly occur with it, such as achieve / set / accomplish or score (if talking about football)
Do you remember the precise moment and modality in which you learnt a new word? What word was it? What context/co-text surrounded the experience?
For me, it was "entrepreneurship"
See? We remember certain words not only because they might be useful for us but because we experienced an emotionally-charged event. Such events might have been coincidental or can be created for our audience. How do we do that? Through PERFORMATIVE ACTS.
• Make a scene • Reading out loud • Create a pattern • Create a catchphrase • Create routines • Use realia • Create out-of-the-ordinary experiences • Make a joke • Use the dictionary
NOW LETS WATCH THIS VIDEO
For example, at the start of class: No Context: “OK everyone, today we’re going to talk about choosing a holiday. Tell your partner about how you choose a holiday. Five minutes. Start
Context: “Hi everyone, great to see you all. Today’s the last day before the holiday! Excited? I was, but my husband and I argued last night about where to go on holiday…” Hear the difference?
So let's set a strong context at the beginning of the lesson, and see the difference it makes.
