of a Paragraph
When a beginner is asked to write a paragraph there is a frequent question...
However, the questions should be...
What are my ideas to present in the paragraph? How many sentences will it have?
How many lines should the paragraph have?
Writing a paragraph is not about the number of lines you have in it, but the ideas you present and how.
To write a paragraph there are three main types of sentences:
- Introductory or topic sentence
- Supporting sentence
- Conclusion or closing sentence
The paragraph is build up by sentences.
Introductory or topic sentence
This is the sentence or sentences that introduce the main idea of your paragraph. It is usually the very first sentence of the paragraph. It will help the reader, know about what your paragraph will be since the beginning.
Supporting sentences
These are the extension of the main idea. These sentences present the evidence, details and examples that support your main idea.
Conclusion or closing sentence
- It recalls the main points of the main idea.
- It closes up the main idea and paragraph.
- Not always necessary.
