Typical British Food

Meals & Meal times
The main meals are: - Breakfast - between 7.00 and 9.00 Lunch - between 12.00 and 1.30 p.m. Dinner - the main meal - between 6.30 and 8.00 p.m.
Full English Breakfast
It includes eggs, bacon, sausage, toast or fried bread, baked beans, grilled tomatoes and mushrooms
Typical breakfast
On most days, people have toast and cereal for breakfast. They also usually have a coffee or tea and a glass of orange juice.
Packed lunch
Many children at school and adults at work will have a 'packed lunch'. This typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit or chocolate and a drink. The 'packed lunch' is kept in a plastic container, called a 'lunch box'.
Afternoon tea / High tea
People have it on special occasions at about 4 or 5 o'clock in the afternoon. It obviously includes tea! The tea is made in a teapot and served with milk and sugar. It also includes sandwiches (ham and mustard, tuna mayonnaise, smoked salmon and cream cheese, egg mayonnaise, etc). Apart from sandwiches, there are also scones served with butter , cream and jam. And, there is also a selection of cakes and biscuits.
Sunday Roast
It is also known as 'Roast Dinner' and it consists of roasted meat (chicken, beef, pork or lamb) combined with roast potatoes and a choice of boiled vegetables such as carrots and peas. It is then covered with gravy (a sauce made from the meat juices of the roasted meat with wine and flour). It also includes Yorkshire puddings which are made by mixing flour, eggs and milk together and then they are cooked in the oven.
Fish & Chips
It is deep-fried battered fish with chips. It is normally accompanied by mushy peas. Typically, the fish used is cod or haddock. It is typical take-away or pub food.
Chicken Tikka Masala
It's a typical Indian dish. Indian food or curry is very popular in Britain. The first Indian restaurant in the UK was opened in London in 1809. Today, nearly every town has at least one Indian restaurant. In Manchester, there's a street known as Curry Mile, which has 70 Indian restaurants!
Scotch Eggs
They are hard-boild eggs that are covered with sausage meat and breadcrumbs and then fried. They are usually eaten as a light lunch or as part of a picnic.
Bangers and Mash is a different way of saying sausages and mashed potatoes. They are normally served with peas and onion gravy. It's a very simple dish to make and it is usually available in pubs.

Baked beans on toast
Baked beans come in a can and are very easy to prepare. Simply heat the beans and put them on toast!
English Pies
A traditional English dish made from small pieces of meat in a sauce with pastry on top. Some typical pies are: -Pork pie -Steak and kidney pie -Steak and Guinness pie They are normally served with mashed potatoes and boiled vegetables.
Toad in the hole
This dish is an adaptation of a Yorkshire pudding. The Yorkshire pudding batter is placed in a large dish and sausages are put on top of the batter. It is then cooked in the oven and served with gravy and mashed potatoes.
Shepherd's pie / Cottage Pie
They are very similar, but have different names depending on the type of meat that is used. Shepherd's pie is made with lamb, but cottage pie is made with beef. The dish consists of minced meat cooked with carrots, onions, tomatoes, etc. The meat is then covered with mashed potato and cooked in the oven.
Trifle
Trifle is a British dessert made with custard, fruit, sponge cake, jam and whipped cream. The ingredients are put in layers and served in a glass bowl.
Apple crumble
A very simple British dessert made with apples and covered with a mixture of flour, butter and sugar. It is usually served hot with custard.
Custard
It's a sweet yellow sauce made from milk and eggs. It is usually served hot with fruit and puddings/desserts.
Cheese
English people have a great love for cheese and over 400 varieties of cheese are produced in England. Many cheeses are named after the place or area they are made in England. The most common are: Cheddar, Stilton, Red Leicester, Cheshire and Double Gloucester.
