A UNIQUE PHILOSOPHY
McDonald's is a popular restaurant system that provides high quality food and uniform preparation methods. Ray Kroc's aim was to serve burgers, fries and drinks that tasted the same in Alaska as they did in Alabama.
To achieve this, he promoted the slogan: "In business for yourself, but not alone". His philosophy was based on the principle of a 3-legged stool: one leg corresponded to McDonald's, the second to suppliers and the third to its employees. The stool was as strong as the three legs that formed its foundation.
WHAT IS A LOGO?
A logo is a symbol consisting of text and images that identifies a company. A good logo shows what a company does and what the brand values. Logo design is all about creating the perfect visual branding for a company. Depending on the type, a logo usually consists of a symbol or trademark and a logotype, along with a slogan.
THE HISTORY OF THE MCDONALD'S LOGO
The golden arches that make up the McDonald's logo have evolved from the 1960s to the present day. In 1955 Ray Kroc, a seller of paper cups and multimixer blenders for milkshakes, decides to visit the two brothers' restaurant. Kroc was impressed by the speed with which they served their menu and joined the company and created the "McDonald's Corporation". Hence the idea of a fast food chain, obtaining the exclusive license from the McDonald's brothers. In 1948 the McDonald's company was going through a difficult time and needed a change.
In 1968 the logo is simplified, the diagonal line disappears and the inner ends of the two arches join. In 1975 the emblem of the golden arches was inserted inside a red rectangle with rounded corners. The McDonald's writing that overlaps by cutting the letter M goes from black to white. Starting in the 90s, McDonald's launched several variations on the Golden Arches, the lines of the M began to be more and more defined, the background color went from white to red and then to green. Accompanying the emblem is the slogan "I'm lovin it". The payoff plays a leading role and even supplants the McDonald's writing that disappears from the logo. The yellow is the only color used and some see in the yellow arches a resemblance to the appearance of the chips sold in McDonald's restaurants.
WHY RED AND YELLOW?
The colors red and yellow were chosen for a specific reason: the color red is stimulating and is associated with being active. It also increases heart rate, which helps to jumpstart your appetite. The color yellow is associated with happiness and is the most visible color in daylight, so that’s why a McDonald’s logo is so easy to spot on a crowded road. The brain processes color before it processes words or shapes, so that’s why the fast-food chain chose these two colors for their logo and brand. Red and yellow makes you hungry, encouraging you to want to buy the product they sell, while also making you feel happy.
