We use the past simple to talk about an action that started and finished in the past.''Vermeer painted ordinary people in domestic scenes.'' ''Austen started her career as a teenager.'' ''Keats decided to write poetry full-time.''

To sum up..
The simple past tense shows that you are talking about something that has already happened. The simple past tense emphasizes that the action is finished! I went to the gym yesterday morning (the action is finished). She saw you at the park last Monday. (the action is finished).
