She Works Hard For the Money

Donna Summer

This song connects to Emilia becasue it's about a hardworking woman who isn't as fortunate as others, and Emilia was the same way. She was like a servant to Desdemona, and did everything she told her to. The lyrics "It's a sacrifice working day to day For little money, just tips for pay But it's worth it all Just to hear them say they care" shows the connection between the song and Emilia because she worked everyday, 24/7, and didn't get much in return. In act III, scene III, Emelia was there to pick up the handkercheif Desdemona dropped, and the line "I'll have the work ta'en out and give it to Iago. What he'll do with it heaven knows, not I. I nothing but to please his fantasy" (Shakespeare 3.3 330-333), shows how Emilia not only worked hard to please Desdemona, but also her husbdand Iago.

Rebel Girl

Bikini Kill

Unlike Desdemona, Emilia wasn't afraid to speak her mind. She knew her values, and wasn't afraid to let the sexist men she was surrounded by know them. Rebel Girl is a song about a femenist who doesn't care what other people think, and does what she wants. Even though Emilia was a servant and very loyal, she also had a femenist/rebellious side. That's why she connects to this song. An example of Emilia's femenist/rebellious side would be one of her lines in act IV when Emelia and Desdemona were talking about cheating on their husbands, "Throwing restraint upon us; or say they strike us, Or scant our former having despite; why we have galls, and though we have some grace, yet we have some revenge. Let husbands know their wives have sense like them;" (Shakespeare 4.3 94-98). Some lyrics from the song that connect to this line are "When she talks, I here a revolution In her hips, there's revolution When she walks, the revoultions coming In her kiss, I taste the revolution."

The Chain

Fleetwood Mac

Emilia and Iago seemed to have a compilcated relationship. Throughout the story we saw that Emilia was loyal to her husband, and wanted to make him happy. For example, when she stole the handkerchief. We also saw that Emilia didn't fully trust Iago. At the end of the book, she turned her back on Iago without much question. A line from the book that best connects to this is in act V, scene II, when Othello told Emilia what Iago told him about Desdeoma and Cassio. Emilia said, "If he say so, may his prenicious soul rot half a grain a day! He lies to th'heart. She was too fond of her most filthy bargain" (Shakespeare 5.2 186-187). This song, "The Chain" has lyrics that deeply connect to this part of the book. The song is about someone's relationship being betrayed by the other persons actions. Some lyrics that truly connect to this would be "Listen to the wind blow, down comes the night Running in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies Break the silence, damn the dark, damn the light."

Rolling in the Deep

Adele

Towards the end of the book we saw how Emilia realized what a monster Iago was. For example, when Emilia asked Iago if he told Othello the lie about Desdemona, and she yelled at him "You told a lie, an odious, damned lie; Upon my soul, a lie a wicked lie" (Shakespeare 5.2 212-213). There are many lryics in Adele's song "Rolling in the Deep" that connect to Emilia in this part of the story, like the the lyrics "There's a fire strating in my heart Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark Finally, I can see you crystal clear Go ahead and seel me out and I'll lay your ship bare." There are also the lyrics "Baby I have no story to be told But I've heard one on you and I'm gonna make your head burn Think of me in the depths of your despair Make a home down there as mine sure won't be shared," which connect to how Emilia felt when she was trying to tell everyone how Cassio had set them up.

Never Gonna Give You Up

Rick Astley

From the beginning, we saw that Emilia was very loyal to Desdemona. She even stood by Desdemona's side in an argument against her own husband. An even greater example would be when Emilia was dying, and wanted to be laid next to Desdemona. During this she said, "Ay, ay! O, lay me by my mistress's side" (Shakespeare 5.2 279). Later, as she was dying, she said to Desdemona's dead body "What did thy song bode, lady? Hark, canst thou hear me? I will play the swan, and die in music" (Shakespeare 5.2 290-292). After that, she continued to sing the willow song, and died proclaiming Desdemona's innocence. Rick Astely's song "Never Gonna Give You Up" really connects to these moments. For example, the chorus of the song: "Never gonna give you upNever gonna let you downNever gonna run around or desert you Never gonna make you cry Never gonna say goodbye Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you."
