• His family are very aware that his role as head of the publishing company means pretty much nothing. Walt's duties consist of essentially being a middleman between Harlan and the bookstores, and his attempts to take initiative are quashed by his father.

• Walt is permanently stuck in his father's shadow, he never lets him take too much power over his life's work and everyone looks down on him for it.
