Biography

Robert Nesta Marley, is the real name of Bob Marley, Jamaican musician and composer, born in Nine Mile, a parish of Saint Ann in Jamaica, on February 6, 1945. Son of Cedella Booker and Norval Marley, an English Jamaican official .Bob's childhood was not easy due to his racial condition as a mulatto, he was despised many times for considering him white in that context, however, he always identified himself as black. Although his father was financially aware of him, his absences were very long due to his work as an officer in the British Armed Forces. He died when Bob was nine years old. He met Bunny Wailer, with whom he composed some songs inspired by the music of Ray Charles and Curtis Myfield. Also around this time, he received singing training with Joe Higgs, a frustrated singer who made his living teaching. In 1963 he decided to form a group together with Bunny and Peter, another of his friends, thus Wailing Wailers was born. This group released their first single "Simmer Down" at the end of that year under the Coxsone record label.

Biography

The group consisted of: Bob Marley mainly, Peter Tosh, Junior Braithwaite, Bunny Wailer, and two women in the choir, Cherry Smith and Beverly Kelso. The Waillers later teamed up with Lee Perry, a music producer behind dub and reggae. In this period, the band had hits like "Soul Rebel", "Duppy Conqueror", "400 Years" and "Small Ax". In 1970, the group was joined by 2 musicians renowned in Jamaica: Aston Barret and Carlton Barren. In 1971 Marley traveled to Sweden and signed with CBS. He received the Medal of Peace by the United Nations in New York, in 1978, after he managed to shake hands in the middle of the stage of the One Love Peace Concert, Prime Minister Michael Manley and his strongest opponent Edward Seaga . Since 1977, Marley has been diagnosed with cancer. He died in 1981 at the Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami at the age of 36.
