RIHANNA FENTY
let's start!
Who is she?
- Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born in Saint Michael and raised in Bridgetown, Barbados on February 20, 1988. She's a singer, actress, fashion artistic director and businesswoman.
- With sales of over 250 million records worldwide, Rihanna is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has earned 14 number-ones and 31 top-ten singles in the US and 30 top-ten entries in the UK. She has 9 Grammy Awards, 13 American Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, and 6 Guinness World Records. Forbes ranked her among the top ten highest-paid celebrities in 2012 and 2014; as of 2019, she is the wealthiest female musician, with an estimated net worth of $600 million. Time magazine named her as one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2012 and 2018.
- Aside from music, Rihanna is known for her involvement in humanitarian causes, and the fashion industry. She is the founder of the nonprofit organisation Clara Lionel Foundation, cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty, and fashion house Fenty under LVMH. Rihanna is also involved into acting, appearing in major roles in Battleship (2012), Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017), and Ocean's 8 (2018). She was appointed as an ambassador of education, tourism, and investment by the Government of Barbados in 2018.
A little bit about her childhood
- She was the eldest child born to humble parents. Her mother worked as an accountant and her father was a warehouse supervisor.
- Rihanna grew up in a small bungalow along with her two younger brothers. Money was always a problem through her childhood. Her father would come home drunk having spent half his paycheck on alcohol and crack. His addictions put tremendous strain on the family and his drug-induced tempers would often turn physical. While her mother was the primary target, on one occasion he turned on Rihanna after she asked just a simple thing as to stay 10 more minutes at the beach.
Facts bout her
- In 2003, Rihanna formed a musical trio with two of her classmates. She was discovered in her home country of Barbados by American record producer Evan Rogers. Without a name or any material, the girl group managed to land an audition with Rogers who commented, "The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist." Rihanna went to Rogers's hotel room, where she performed renditions of Destiny's Child's "Emotion" and Mariah Carey's "Hero". Impressed, Rogers scheduled a second meeting with Rihanna's mother present and then invited Rihanna to his hometown in the United States to record some demo tapes that could be sent to record labels. Recordings were intermittent, taking about a year, because she was only able to record during school holidays.
- Rihanna is a mezzo-soprano. While recording tracks for her third studio album, she took vocal lessons. Speaking of the experience she stated, "I've never had vocal training, so when I'm in the studio, he'll tell me how to breathe and stuff". Her vocal performance in 2010 received a lot of positive reviews from music critics. James Skinner from BBC praised Rihanna's vocals on the song "Love the Way You Lie" and wrote that her voice is powerful and that "it is Rihanna's vocal – at once commanding, soulful and vulnerable".
Why is she an inspiring women?
Growing up Rihanna was always the odd one out. She often wore clothes adapted her appearance to her own taste, rather than to society’s norms and standards. When she was just 14 years old, her parents divorced. Along with the anxiety of the separation, came extreme headaches. So the way she found to escape the tensions and the suffer was music and quickly moved to the US to pursue a career in signing. From high school the model knew that she wanted to dedicate herself to singing. Her inspirations were Mariah Carey, Celin Dion, and Whitney Houston. She remained true to her passion for music, her dreams began to climb into the world of fame.At school she suffered bullying. They called her "white" because her skin was lighter than the average for the region. A childhood full of abuse, violence and drugs marked the star not only in her life, but also in her career. Also, Rihanna dated Chris Brown, a rapper from an equally turbulent childhood. The relationship was shaky and the night before her performance at the 51st Grammy Awards, Rihanna found suspicious text messages on her phone. She confronted him as they drove home, the discussion heated up and Chris threw the first punch. Rihanna, a tough woman with military training, fought back. It turned into an all-out in-car battle, where she came out severely cut and bruised, with strangulation marks around her neck. She opened up about this in an interview that she had with Oprah Winfrey. Basically, although today she is known as a strong and empowered woman, the singer had a life of suffering and emotional storms.
