This document is an ad dated in the 1940s. It was created by the beer brand* Schlitz. In the background and on the left, I can see a kitchen and a table with glasses, plates and 2 beers. The woman is crying; she is sad because she was cooking and she has burnt* the food. This ad shows* that women really enjoy cooking for their husbands* / for men; this is a stereotype. In the middle, I can see the husband who is not angry* because his wife* burnt the dinner but she didn’t burn the beers (it’s in the slogan). The man is in the middle of the picture because he is represented as an important person. The wife is not in the middle because she not so important. So this ad shows male chauvinism. In my opinion, this ad is shocking/revolting because it was serious in the 1940s.

This document is an ad dated in the 1950s. It was created by the brand* Hoover. The background is white, the hoover is red and the dress of the woman is green: these are the colours of Christmas. On the left, I can see a woman reading a Christmas card. She got a hoover as a Christmas present*/gift* and she looks very happy. In the foreground, I can read the slogan “Christmas morning, she’ll be happier with a hoover”. The slogan explains* that hoovers are the best presents/gifts for women. It is quite shocking because women are considered as materialistic* and this is a stereotype. It means that*, women’s place is at home and their role is to clean the house.

Correction

COMPLETE the correction and WRITE the vocab in your copybook. This document is the UK trailer of the movie Suffragettes dated 2015 and starring actresses Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep. The film was made by Sarah Gavron. The film happens in 2012 in London, England. It is inspired by a real story / a true story*. The main character* is a woman who works at a laundry*. Her marriage is unhappy because her husband controls her. She is a woman and she is supposed to be respectful to men.Women fight to get the right to vote*. On the video, I can see women speaking out on the street, demonstrating* on the street, throwing stones* on the shops or planting a bomb in a letter box. They use violent tactics. I can see poor and rich women: all women unite to get the right to vote. One female character repeats the slogan “we want to be law makers”= women want to vote and make decisions with men. This female character is a leader: “Never surrender*. Never give up* the fight”.The main character is very determined and she says “We will win”.Some men make fun of* and laugh at* the women. Police forces use violence against the women because they don’t want anarchy/disorder in town. The main character is separated from her children because her husband has decided to punish her.

Extra work

“ And, the more I spoke about feminism, the more I realized that fighting for women’s rights has too often become synonymous with man-hating.” “ But my recent research has shown me that feminism has become an unpopular word ”.

“ When at 18, my male friends were unable to express their feelings ”. “ I’ve seen men made fragile and insecure by a distorted sense of what constitutes male success. Men don’t have the benefits of equality”.

“We want to try to mobilize as many men and boys as possible to be advocates for change.” “Men, I would like to take this opportunity to extend your “formal invitation ”.

Un recap en français si besoin:

RECAP
